Costco Chicken Bakes: A Delicious Comfort Food Review

I’ve been exploring the world of Costco food for several years now, but every so often, I come across a product that truly piques my interest. One such discovery is the Kirkland Signature Chicken Bakes. Unfortunately, these delectable treats aren’t available in Canada, but their resemblance to calzones and chicken Caesar wraps has me intrigued. So, are these Chicken Bakes as tasty as they appear? Let’s find out!

Location in Store

You’ll find these mouthwatering Chicken Bakes in the freezer section of your local Costco. During my visit to the Kalispell, Montana branch, I grabbed a box with the item number 1201906.

Taste

When I first read the description of these Chicken Bakes, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. They seemed like a fusion of a chicken Caesar salad and a stromboli. And you know what? That’s precisely what they tasted like!

After baking the Chicken Bake for 40 minutes, the outer shell had a delightful crunch, while the dough remained soft and chewy. The sprinkling of cheese on the outside added a satisfying crunch and a burst of cheesy flavor.

The filling was mild but tasty. The flavors of chicken, bacon, and Caesar dressing shone through, while the cheeses took a back seat. The bacon added a delightful smokiness to the mix.

The balance between the dough and the filling was quite good, though I wouldn’t have minded a bit more filling. Overall, these Chicken Bakes were satisfying comfort food, perfect for both kids and adults.

Cost

A box of these Chicken Bakes contains six individually wrapped delights, weighing in at 1.36 kilograms, and costs $12.69 USD. I was initially surprised by the smaller quantity, but once I saw their substantial size, I realized that each one was worth a little over two dollars.

Convenience

The package provides two heating methods: oven or microwave. Personally, I prefer using the oven for optimal crispiness, but I’m willing to bet these Chicken Bakes would also turn out well in an air fryer. Just be careful not to microwave them, as they might become a bit soggy.

Since these Chicken Bakes are individually packaged, they’re incredibly convenient to bring to work or school. Simply pop one in the microwave for a quick and delicious lunch.

Nutrition

Now, let’s talk about the nutritional value of these Chicken Bakes. Each one contains 540 calories, 19 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat, 70 milligrams of cholesterol, 1370 milligrams of sodium, 58 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 7 grams of sugar, and a whopping 35 grams of protein.

It’s important to note that the sodium content is quite high, so if you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, you might want to pass on these. However, considering the substantial size of each Chicken Bake, the calorie, fat, and carbohydrate content doesn’t seem too bad. Plus, the protein content is impressive, showing that they don’t skimp on the chicken!

Ingredients

The ingredient list for these Chicken Bakes is extensive, with separate lists for the dough and the filling. While some ingredients raise questions, such as “chicken breast strips with rib meat” and the inclusion of soy protein, it’s worth mentioning that these Chicken Bakes contain wheat, soy, eggs, milk, and fish (from the anchovy extract in the Caesar dressing).

As someone who prefers less processed foods, I’m not thrilled with some of the ingredients like sugar, soybean oil, soy protein, and corn syrup solids. However, as an occasional treat, these Chicken Bakes can still bring joy to your taste buds.

Scoring

Here’s a breakdown of my rating for Costco’s Kirkland Signature Chicken Bakes:

  • Taste: 8.5/10
  • Cost: 7.5/10
  • Convenience: 9.5/10
  • Nutrition: 2/10 (Points mainly for the high protein content)

Overall Verdict

Based on my experience and feedback from my parents, who also loved these Chicken Bakes, I highly recommend giving them a try. They make for a quick and convenient meal or snack, ideal for busy days or when you’re craving some comforting indulgence.
