Giving the Gift of Food: Sharing Love One Meal at a Time
Some of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had were ones that arrived unexpectedly at my doorstep during times of sickness or exhaustion. There’s something incredibly heartwarming about knowing that someone is thinking of you and taking the effort to bring you a delicious meal when you have no energy to cook.
The Simplicity of a Meaningful Gesture
Are you overwhelmed at the thought of delivering a meal to another family? Trust me, I used to be in the same boat. As a newlywed, a friend once asked me if I could take a meal to another family, and I agreed without hesitation. But soon after, panic set in. I had no idea what to cook or how to go about it, so I called my mom and asked her to prepare the meal I was supposed to deliver!
Looking back, I wish I had known that the meal doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, a simple pot of soup or a dish of pasta can be appreciated beyond words. It’s the gesture and thoughtfulness that truly matter.
Inspiring Ideas for Meal Delivery
If you’re wondering what kind of meal to take, let me share some of our favorite options. From comforting soups and stews to convenient crock-pot meals, pasta dishes, and casseroles, these recipes are sure to make someone’s day. I’ll even provide some tips on how to transport each meal safely.
Crock-Pot Chicken Fajitas
One delightful option is Crock-Pot Chicken Fajitas. You can deliver the flavorful filling in a disposable pan covered in foil or a large disposable plastic dish. Don’t forget to include tortillas or a side of plain cooked rice or Spanish Rice for serving. It’s a meal that brings a taste of Mexican cuisine right to their doorstep.
Italian Red Wine Roast Beef
For a heartwarming classic, try Italian Red Wine Roast Beef. This versatile recipe can be made in a crock-pot or oven. Once it’s cooked to perfection, transfer the meat to a disposable metal pan and cover it tightly with foil. Don’t forget to pack some mashed potatoes or boiled red potatoes, along with a refreshing salad or roasted vegetables, to complete the meal.
Chicken Tetrazzini
A creamy and comforting option is Chicken Tetrazzini. This dish is a true crowd-pleaser. Prepare it in a disposable pan and cover it tightly with foil after baking. Consider adding a Strawberry Spinach Salad or some freshly baked bread to make it a meal that friends are certain to love.
Southwest Chicken Salad with Spicy Ranch Dressing
On warmer days, when a hot meal might not be as appealing, Southwest Chicken Salad with Spicy Ranch Dressing is a fantastic choice. Layer the salad into a large disposable pan and tuck a jar of salad dressing alongside it. With a bag of tortilla chips or Fritos on the side, you’ll have a delicious dinner ready in no time.
Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas or Mexican Lasagna
Another great option is Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas or Mexican Lasagna. Both of these flavorful casseroles can be made ahead of time and then simply baked before delivery. Prepare them in a large disposable pan and cover with foil. And the best part? You can double the recipe and feed your own family too!
BBQ Chicken Stuffed Baked Potatoes
If you’re looking for a hassle-free meal, BBQ Chicken Stuffed Baked Potatoes are an excellent choice. Place the warm chicken and sauce in a disposable metal pan tightly covered with foil or a plastic container with a lid. Pack the baked potatoes in a separate disposable metal pan and cover them with foil. Remember to pack the toppings separately for easy assembly.
Sweet and Tangy Crock-Pot Pulled Pork
For a finger-licking good option, consider Sweet and Tangy Crock-Pot Pulled Pork. Transfer the pork to a disposable tray and cover it with foil. Don’t forget to bring along some soft rolls and a jar of barbecue sauce for pulled pork sandwiches. Southern Style Coleslaw and Slow Cooker Baked Beans make perfect side dishes to complement the meal.
Baked Potato Soup
There’s nothing quite like a comforting bowl of Baked Potato Soup. This recipe can be made on the stove or in a Crock-Pot. When delivering soup, it’s best to take it cooled and in a large gallon-size freezer-strength Ziploc bag or plastic freezer-safe containers that won’t need to be returned. Pack the toppings separately for easy customization.
Spicy Five Bean Chili
Similar to soup, Spicy Five Bean Chili can be delivered cooled, ready to be reheated. Place it in a large gallon-size Ziploc bag or plastic freezer-safe containers if it’s still warm. As always, pack the toppings separately. A bag of Fritos or a pan of cornbread is a fantastic addition to complete the pot of chili.
Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
During hot summer days, a refreshing Pasta Salad like Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad is a perfect choice. You can deliver it in plastic containers, metal trays, or even gallon-size Ziploc bags. The goal is to ensure it arrives intact while staying deliciously chilled.
Easy Dessert Recipes
While dessert is not a requirement, it’s always a sweet addition to any meal. Consider including easy dessert recipes like Fudge Brownies, Chocolate Chip Blondies, Monster Cookie Bars, or Rice Krispy Treats. These treats can be whipped up in no time with minimal effort. Use smaller disposable pans for baking and delivering desserts, making it easy for recipients to enjoy a delightful sweet treat.
Sharing Love Through Food
I first wrote this post seven years ago when my friends Ashley and Ryan from Center Cut Cook received the news of Ryan’s battle with cancer. Although we were miles apart and I couldn’t deliver a meal to their door, I participated in a virtual potluck to show my support.
Over the next four years, Ryan bravely fought metastatic colon cancer, enduring more than 70 rounds of chemotherapy. His story is one of faith, hope, strength, courage, and love. The impact he made on countless lives reminds us all not to take a single moment for granted.
“When you die, it does not mean you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” – Stuart Scott
